Thoughts on Mercy as Mission
So what does this mean?
Micah 6:8
“He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God”.
Love mercy?
Do you really believe He desires that we love mercy?
Do you love to spend time being merciful?
Do we even have a good understanding of what mercy is?
Defining mercy
I asked 3 of my favorite baristas - they all struggled.
One said forgiveness or maybe putting others first.
Two had a notion of the Lord having mercy on us.
Mercy: An attitude of the heart that is disposed toward compassion. Most often translated to mean kindness or goodness. Mercy is often expressed through acts of justice and restoration.
Compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one's power to punish, harm, or neglect.
Luke 10:25-37 NIV On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?” “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?” He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.” But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’ “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
A Very full illustration but Three things I get that affect the idea of mercy.
We can't respond fully to God without loving our neighbor.
We can't love our neighbors fully without loving mercy.
We can't love mercy without action.
Very difficult to love your neighbor & bring the gospel to them if you don't love mercy. Mercy is a gateway for the gospel & fundamental to life on mission.
So how do we do that? Engage in their circumstances to address needs personally or through community. We have to find a way to be in proximity or relationship to respond to our neighbors need. Engagement doesn't mean we have to fix everything, we can't always change the circumstance but our mercy can bring comfort.
How will we know when we've really made headway on this missional thing? It is a journey for us, individual & corporately with no score card. Perhaps when I can ask you every 2 months to send me an update news letter just like we expect from other missionaries? Tell me about all occasions you extended mercy to someone?
Matthew 5:7 God blesses those who are merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Matthew 18:33 Shouldn’t you have mercy on your fellow servant, just as I had mercy on you?’
Luke 10:36-37 “Now which of these three would you say was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by bandits?” Jesus asked. The man replied, “The one who showed him mercy.”Then Jesus said, “Yes, now go and do the same.”
Galatians 6:9-10 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone.
Colossians 3:12 Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
Ephesians 2:4 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much.
Jude 1:2 May God give you more and more mercy, peace, and love.
Psalm 112:9 They share freely and give generously to those in need. Their good deeds will be remembered forever. They will have influence and honor.
Luke 3: 8-11 - John the Baptist
"Prove by the way you live that you have repented of your sins and turned to God"... The crowds asked, “What should we do?” John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.”
With the love of mercy comes a heart of compassion, followed by the power to affect.
Power to affect - action or inaction makes a difference.
