What I have learned about Thanksgiving

Like a lot of people while growing up, my Thanksgiving Holidays  were always a family affair. It may have been at the homes of different relatives, but except for an occasional single neighbor guest it was mostly just an annual visit with family who were leading different lives than us. It was a delightful feast with good manners where the cares of the world were put on hold for the day. When I started my own family we largely continued this tradition.

But a change took place in me when I became a Jesus follower. Suddenly the whole notion of what I was thankful for, & who I was thankful to, brought a whole new significance to the Holiday. Also a strong desire to share it with others. So we began a new tradition of inviting others to join our family, especially people who would be alone that day. They have been joyful days, sometimes including memorable unexpected experience’s, but always a great blessing.

Since I have been involved with CAP this last decade, a third component has been added. I have gained a much greater awareness of the difficulties a lot of people have with the holiday season. Many people tend to feel loss, isolation, poverty, & regrets in greater measure during this time of year. The awareness of this, is itself a blessing. Empathy makes us better humans & stimulates helpful actions. It has also caused me to be more thankful to God for my family & friends. Thankful for His generosity, faithfulness, & opportunities to bless.

A peasant Christmas
